4 effective strategies to make your days more positive

Updated: Aug 8, 2019

It is safe to say that a lot of us sometimes feel overwhelmed with our everyday lives.

We feel overwhelmed with our jobs, our schooling, or perhaps circumstances that seem to not be changing.

As a result, we then begin to spend more time stressing about the responsibilities of life instead of actually enjoying each moment.

Now that social media is a significant part of our lives as well, what we see posted on Instagram and Facebook can seem quite different from our own realities. So of course, we might look at others and assume that we are lacking in our own lives.

Some people, or even the media, can make being positive seem like easy attainment, but the average human being knows that not every day will be filled with feelings of happiness.

However, even though at times it might seem like life is filled with the same ole experiences over and over again and that maintaining a positive lifestyle is out of reach, there are ways to ensure that your days are filled with some form of positivity.

Here are 10 effective strategies for a more positive day

1. Have a personal goal to accomplish for each day ( even if it is small).

Since the beginning of the new year, I have made it a personal goal to try and eat healthier and go to the gym. If I can be honest, the exercise part has been very difficult for me. It's winter ( here in Toronto, Canada at least) and getting up and going to the gym can seem like a brutal task at times. However, I've decided to use the equipment I have at home when it is too cold out and I am also now a member of my gym. A year ago, I definitely couldn't see myself making these steps so this is an improvement.

It doesn't matter how small the task, whether it be: joining the gym, starting a blog, cutting back on unhealthy eating habits, or journaling to write down what you are grateful for.

Setting a goal for yourself will remind you that you are moving forward to where you want to be in life and it will also remind you that the mundane tasks of everyday living are only a part of that equation.

2. Remind yourself that every area of your life serves a purpose

I will be the first one, be honest, and say that the 20 something hustle is not glamorous for a lot of us. Some of us are switching our jobs constantly, we are in jobs that we don't like or that we feel limit our potential and we may be struggling with trying to get to the place in our lives that we define as 'comfortable.'

Constantly having to hustle 24/7 and still feel like you are in the same position can be very difficult.

However, this year I have begun to do try and look at life from a different perspective. When I find myself in a job that I don't like and resent the fact that I am not yet living out my dream of being a writer full-time, I ask myself what this particular job is teaching me and how it can serve me in my future endeavors.

Every season serves a purpose. Right now, perhaps this season of your life is less about making it to where you want to be but is more about pruning your character for where you are meant to be.

Sometimes being happy in life comes from changing our perspectives on things.

3. Have at least one activity in your day that you can look forward to

Your days don't have to be all work and no play. You can have activities in your day that make each moment more pleasurable. If you have the time after school, walk around a mall for a bit or meet up with a friend for coffee. If you have a job and they are inviting everyone out for dinner, take advantage of an opportunity for some well-needed downtime and go!

Having at least one activity of downtime in your day can change your mood significantly. Even those moments where you are reading a great book on the train is considered downtime.

4. Don't let ONE bad moment ruin your day

Ever have a day that is going great only to have ONE bad moment ruin it for good? We've all been there. Usually, in these moments we just begin to ruminate on that moment and we let it consume our emotions. When it comes to days like this, remember that some things aren't even worth our energy. So the next time you find yourself in a bad encounter with a coworker, a classmate, you are just having a moment that is giving off negative vibes, try and think about if it is even worth your energy. Then, enjoy the rest of your day.

No day will be perfect, but there are definitely days where positivity outweighs all the negative and these tips should be able to help you find that balance.
